How to Shirr fabric?
- Firstly, Stitch repeated rows of gathering stitches over selection to be shirred, spacing rows an equal distance apart. Gather each row separately by pulling on bobbin thread.
- Measure first row when it is shirred and make sure that all subsequent rows are gathered to the same length.
- Secure rows, by tying the thread ends on each row, then place a line of machine stitches across the ends of all rows .
- Enclose the thread ends in a small pin tucks to hold them securely.
- If shirring is to be joined to a flat piece, first place gathering stitches in seam allowance, one row just inside the seam line and a second 6 mm.
- Stitch rows for shirring , and shirr to desired width.
- Gather and attach seam as specified in basic procedure of gathering.
- The Fullness produced by shirring should be presses with great care
- If it is not, the weight of the iron will flattern the folds and ruin in the intended effect.
- Finally, Press on the wrong side, into the fullness, with just the point of the iron .
